T-Rex – Children of the Revolution

T-Rex – Children of the Revolution

Children of the Revolution is a song by English rock band T. Rex, written by Marc Bolan. Released as a single, it originally peaked at No. 2 in the UK in September 1972, having been pipped in the charts at that time by Slade’s ‘Mama weer all crazee now’ and then David Cassidy’s ‘How can I be sure’. This was after T-Rex had enjoyed four consecutive UK No. 1’s with ‘Hot Love’, ‘Get It On’, ‘Telegram Sam’ and ‘Metal Guru’.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS

In several interviews, Marc Bolan pointed out that the meaning of the song is indeed about teenage rebellion, not pro-communist (as some media was reporting, at the time), but was more based on the behavioral revolution that was happening at the time, with the growth of the popularity of rock and roll, through bands such as the Beatles and Rolling Stones.

Unlike most of T-Rex’s other hits, Children of the Revolution was not part of an original album release, but first appeared as part of the film ‘Born to Boogie’. The film was created by Ringo Starr and was filmed at John Lennon’s Ascot Sound Studios, with Elton John on piano and Ringo playing second drums, accompanying T-Rex.

The scene involving the song Children of the Revolution sees Marc Bolan singing part of the song with his head inside Elton’s piano.

The song has been included in several movies, such as Children of the Revolution, Billy Elliot, Breakfast on Pluto, Dogtown and Z-Boys, and Moulin Rouge. It’s also played in the 2010 promotional trailer for the game Fable III.

SONG LYRICS

[Verse 1]
Well you can bump and grind
It is good for your mind
Well you can twist and shout
Let it all hang out

[Chorus]
But you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, no, no

[Verse 2]
Well you can Terraplane
In the falling rain
I drive a Rolls-Royce
'Cause it's good for my voice

[Chorus]
But you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, no, no

Yeah

[Chorus]
But you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the revolution
No way!
